Despite being almost 20 years old, they remain irreplaceable studio tools. A DMX or RMX in good condition good one will usually sell for $2800 or more. However, these units have always been difficult to service. In North America, professional repair was almost completely unavailable until last year, when we added the AMS DMX and RMX models to the specialty audio gear that we service. In the last year or so we’ve serviced over 100 AMS units. Our AMS clients include well known studios, artists, record labels, producers, and engineers. We keep spares of each circuit board and our shop has every single part that is used in the DMX and RMX, and keep working samples on hand in our shop. We’ve got all the documentation and have established a thorough restoration program to return these units to their original specs and get them sounding like new. We begin by removing all the cards, cleaning and inspecting the chassis, cleaning all the edge connector sockets, cleaning all the contacts on the edge connectors, and replacing the main power supply capacitors and fuses. We then test the power supplies, repairing any faults that are found. The cards and edge connectors are cleaned with a special type of lapping film, to remove corrosion and improve reliability. The foam stabilizers for the PC boards are replaced, if needed. After we confirm that the power supply voltages are ok we reinstall the cards, and install a new set of custom built ribbon cables (11 in the DMX, 10 in the RMX). We calibrate the sampler board and converter boards, check specs, and give the unit a two day burn in test. Our RMX service includes a firmware installation that gives you 3 extra reverb programs: “Room A0”, “Image”, and “Reverse 2”. These programs will appear in program locations 10, 11, and 12. If we run into a major problem on the motherboard, there’s an additional charge. If the unit has a bad PC board, we replace the board with a repair/exchange unit from our stock of spares, at an additional charge. On many older units, we can add memory, upgrade the power supply, and upgrade the software. An AMS serviced by us has been given a new lease on life and is likely to be trouble free for many years. The basic charge for a RMX refurb is $700. Refurb of an DMX is $800. The owner of the unit is responsible for shipping both ways, shipping costs are not included in the service charge. Labor and materials are guaranteed for 60 days. Our return rate is very low but in the event you have a problem, we’ll get you taken care of as quickly as possible.
